This class will provide you with the background you will need to be successful in the rest of the science courses you will take. It also provides you with 1 of the 3 necessary science credits for high school graduation. There are 4 rules that will govern our course as we meet:
- • Follow Directions
- • Act Respectfully
- • Safety First
- • Take Responsibility
Below are policies that will govern the daily conduct of the class.
ABSENCE POLICY
Student attendance: Students must attend to stay current with the subject matter taught. Often concepts build on each other in sequence. Missing part of it means difficulty understanding what follows:
1. Being absent from class means missing activities that cannot be re-created: cooperative learning, group discussions, and lecture. When you miss more than 2 class periods in a quarter you have missed out on an important part of your educational experience. In order for you to get credit for material missed, you will conduct an independent science project. These projects will be assigned on a case by case basis.
2. If absent the day an assignment is due it is your responsibility to talk with me to get it turned in (i.e. the first day you come back). If absent the day it is assigned come to me to discuss an appropriate due date for you.
TARDY POLICY Bells: When the bell rings you are to be in the classroom and in your seat ready to work. If you fail to do so you will report to the student assistance lab to get an entry slip. Tardy consequences will be handled by them and will result in the following:
1. You are expected to be in class prepared to work and on time every day. While this expectation is possible for some it isn’t probable. Every tardy will be accounted for (excused or unexcused). 2. When a student shows there is a problem (more than 2 in one quarter) then action will be taken. Citizenship points will be reduced as follows: 1 = S, 2 = N (parents notified), 3 = U and will be referred to administration .
LATE WORK 1. Work will be accepted for full credit after the turn in date if it has been pre-arranged. If you think you are going to be late turning in work then come and see me at least the day before it is due. Limited use of this policy is expected and if it becomes a habit it can be discontinued.
2. If you do not pre-approve an assignment then the chances of it being accepted for full credit are very small. The later the assignment, the smaller the amount of credit. The key is to communicate with me and let me know what is going on.
NO-GRADE POLICY 1. Any work in making up an “F” is the responsibility of the student. I will not re-teach units/lessons or re-create labs/activities. A student needs to be motivated and disciplined enough to work on his/her own. 2. To make up the “F” the student will complete a project that includes showing understanding of concepts covered in the class. 3. Grading scale: A = 100 - 93, A- = 92 – 90, B+ = 89 - 87, B = 86 – 84, B- = 83 – 80, C+ = 79 – 77, C = 76 - 74, C- = 73 – 70, D+ = 69 – 67, D = 66 - 64, D- = 63 – 59, < 59 = F. GRADING POLICY 50% Tests and Walkaways
TESTS AND WALKAWAYS (50%) - Walkaways assess basic competency of the class objectives. Passing each and every walkaway is REQUIRED. Passing is a score of 80% or above, - and correcting each missed question with a reasonable explanation as to what makes the correct answer right.
Each failed walkaway must be retaken. This does NOT mean you get the second score. When a walkaway is passed on the FIRST try, the score is entered on your grade. Be prepared by studying so you pass the FIRST TIME. To retake a walkaway, a student must have corrected the missed questions with reasonable explanations as to the correct answer, and update assignments that were vital to the concepts missed. If another try is required, the student must correct questions missed as described and then do assignments to assist learning the material before it can be taken again.
Tests will allow you to be assessed. They will cover material from labs/activities and daily work, they help discover how much walkaway material is still remembered. Term 4 grade will include the final SAGE exam as part of the grade.
LABS, ACTIVITIES AND CITIZENSHIP (50%) – These will be based on what we learn and do in class. Learning requires active participation. Some items will be turned in upon completion and others will be recorded in your notebook to be graded later. Worksheets will be done on other materials, and to reinforce lab concepts and other subject matter. Citizenship points will be given for participation, good planner use, and behavior. MATERIALS - Bring with you to class: pencil and pen, planner, lined notebook, composition notebook, binder, simple calculator, colored pencils. We won’t use every item every day, but we will use them often, so have them with you. There is a condensed textbook available to buy online, or simply download the pdf for free, http://www.schools.utah.gov/CURR/science/OER.aspx .
